Formally the Single Pitch Award, or SPA. This revamped award has an extra day on the training and turns you into a rock climbing instructor. We are offering these courses through Paul Poole, who is a Mountain Training Provider for the award (Mountain Training Cymru Provider No. 10003). This is an amazing entry level qualification for climbers wanting to work in the outdoor industry.    

The Rock Climbing Instructor – Assessment Course is ideal for anyone who wants to manage groups at single pitch crags and indoor climbing walls. It is an industry standard qualification and one that has started the career of many mountaineering instructors and guides.

The course will assess the Rock Climbing Instructor Syllabus over two days and is delivered practically at a number of crags and a climbing wall. To pass you will have to demonstrate how to operate as a competent and safe Rock Climbing Instructor, with the course is designed to promote discussion on the wide variety of technical equipment available and methods of working on a crag with a group.

PRIOR EXPERIENCE REQUIRE?

  • Have attended Rock Climbing Instructor training
  • You must be familiar with the syllabus.
  • You must be competently leading Severe grade climbs on outdoor crags with leader-placed protection.
  • You must have led (and logged) a minimum of 40 graded rock climbs with traditional protection at a variety of venues (of which at least 20 MUST be at Severe grade or above).
  • You must be proficient in the use of climbing walls and have a minimum of 30 climbing wall leads graded at F4 or above.
  • You must be proficient in outdoor bolt protected sport climbing and have a minimum of 10 sport climb leads graded at F4 or above.
  • You must have assisted in the supervision of 20 instructed sessions post training. These sessions should be at a variety of different venues with 10 being on indoor climbing walls and the other 10 on outdoor crags. A session is a half day or evening.
  • You must hold a current first aid certificate, minimum 16 hours and relevant to your work as a Rock Climbing Instructor.

 

WHAT FORMAT IS THE COURSE?

The rock climbing instructor assessment course runs over two days time outside on single pitch crags, where you will be show us you can manage a group  in line with the syllabus and safe practice with a group of novice climbers. Part of a day is then spent in an indoor climbing wall assessing your indoor group management and coaching skills.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED?

We expect you to be interested in rock climbing to come on the course as such you will need you own harness, helmet and basic rock climbing equipment, including a rack and rope. We can provide some specialist equipment for the training course. A full kit list is provided.

The course is non-residential, so you will need to find accommodation for the duration of the course.

You will also need to supply your own food throughout the course.
